How I'd "fix": Lego Dimensions

Well, fixed is being used loosely here.

With talk on Dimensions ceasing production, and counter talk saying that it isn't, I'd like to go back to it to talk about things I'd like to see done if they do go for a "Dimensions 2". This is not meant to be me saying I could do the job better, far from it. These are more ideas that, if I was a part of the development team for whatever reason, what I would suggest.

  1. Drop the Toys to Life model

This is a no brainer, due to me personally thinking its the main thing holding Dimensions back. I know it sounds weird but hear me out. One thing that the team cannot do, or at least try not to do, is sell power. Most of the power ups you can get from the packs are cosmetic upgrades that do fit the worlds they come from, but have little practical use. There are some that are useful, like a stud magnet, cheaper upgrades, ect. But for everyone of those, there's two more that are "replace music with *x*", "give all vehicles *y*" "wear dino hats". Every Lego game has upgrades like that, but they are balanced out with things like extra stud multipliers, invincibility, and others that have more use to them, help with the pacing of the game, something that Dimensions can't really do because the way to get red bricks are bared off unless you have characters that can get to the Adventure worlds they're from. On top of that, there are characters which are required to get collectables that you could be waiting months to get. Raven's one I know about in Year 2 as you can't complete the Adventure Time level without her, Gamer Kid had 50 arcade games you could only start getting late into Year 1, and unless you have Supergirl, you're not completing the Sonic Level. Just to name a few. None of these would be a problem in a normal Lego Game, as then the only thing blocking off your progression is the amount of studs you had, whereas the way its going with Dimensions as it is, if you needed a character, you're probably paying $25-$80 (that's based on brick and mortar stores in Australian dollars for the record), which on top of the $180 for the starter pack, will not help get customers, especially when the audience you target relies of their parents to buy it for them.
  2. Give us a reason to use these vehicles

To those who haven't played Dimensions. around 90-95% of the vehicles and vehicle upgrades... are completely useless and really only exist to make an attempt to justify the price tag of the sets (which they suck at for the record). With the exception of some specific vehicles for the occasional secret area and puzzle, you have no reason to use the vehicles. Boats and submarines are only used in adventure words, which is negated by characters who can swim, which you'd probably find out before you got a submarine. Planes are really only used for lifting specific items onto switches, as there are characters who can fly on their own and fly faster, and cars, while the most useful, still aren't often used unless you want to move faster, in which case you're probably flying. Gadgets are the ones that get the most use along with special vehicles, things like the Ghost trap, Arcade machine, TARDIS, DeLorian, ect, but like the cars, are the most situational. Combined with all the vehicles sharing the same stats depending on what kind of vehicle they are, and you get the 90-95% useless number (roughly). I'd like to see vehicles get more use, levels built around using them, give me reasons for having these. I admit the Lego games have had a lot of issues with useless vehicles, but in other games they did have reasons for you to use them, levels that had you play as them, or puzzles that required a vehicle to be built and used to move on. Rather then "Use a vehicle of your choice to use this dash panel you could fly over" "Use one to lift this box" "Use one to charge up this machine".
  3. Real Lego sets based on the game

What do I mean by that? Well, I'd like to see sets based on the idea, even if its just a series of collectable minifigs. Most people who buy the sets, buy them for the characters, especially ones like the Twelfth Doctor, Chell, Sonic, Mr T, and other characters who haven't been minifigs before. There is a market for these characters as minifigs, and if they were turned into sets based on their franchises or from the game itself, that would be even better. Doing this and taking away the Toys to Life aspect would cut the games cost in half, so that the people who want the game can get the game, those who want the sets can get the sets, and those who want both can throw their money away now. Everyone wins!
  4. Keep the Portal

I know that might sound crazy, seeing as before I did say to drop Toys to Life. But I will admit that the Portal is a interesting mechanic, and has led to some interesting puzzles. It could even be something like a phone app that connects to the game which would let you do the puzzles, control characters to go to specific areas to do some sort of Rube Goldberg like puzzle, or even take something from Lego Star Wars 3 and have a way to control units of soldiers on a battlefield. You could even connect it to the physical sets, like they do with the Nexo Knights sets, and have a way to scan codes to unlock things like costumes (not characters, not power). There is an idea here for controlling parts of the game with something other then a standard controller that I'd love to see more games take use of, we have the technology for this, and its a safe bet everyone who'd get the game would have access to a phone or tablet.
  5. Better navigation in adventure worlds

I hate navigating the adventure worlds, I really do. It's slow, easy to get lost, especially in the year 2 worlds, and the tools you have for navigating it just makes it a chore. There are ways it could be fixed. Things like the radar showing some signs of world geography rather then a blank circle with icons giving a rough idea where things are, the ghost studs from previous Lego games (if you choose) to point to the closest collectable to where you are, a way to bring up some sort of map of the world. Games have been designing ways of navigating open worlds since the 80's, we have a good idea on how to be a gentle guide if the player wants, and there are far better ways then "Look at all the arrows clogging up your HUD, there they are, go find them".
  6. Less of the old, more of the new

I'm going to probably shoot down a lot of older readers nostalgia here with this. But Dimensions needed more characters that kids of this day and age would know better. There are some that are timeless, like the DC superheroes, and a lot of the Lego IP's in the game helped a lot. But, most children, and I say most intentionally so please don't spam me with "but my kid does", are not going to care about things like The Wizard of Oz, Lord of the Rings (though that ones more debatable), Back to the Future, Portal 2, the original Ghostbusters, Doctor Who, Mission Impossible, The A-Team, Gremlins, E.T, Knight Rider, The Goonies and Beetlejuice. Like it or not, those are aimed at older players, the parents and older siblings. Before anyone says it, no, there is nothing wrong with them being in the game, see before about the minifigs. What I will say was that there needed to be more IP's in the game that targeted children with things they're growing up with, the IP's you can find on TV and in movies right now. Because those would have been what kids would have begged their parents to get, because they knew them. Parents would see the sets from their childhoods, maybe getting them too and congratulations, they just got more money.
  7. Lego Engine 2.0

The game engine they're using for these games is showing its age. The games are becoming stale, in game visuals look like they haven't improved, and are aging badly. Their cutscenes are looking better then the games they come from, and showing that they're pre rendered and not done in game. Its time for an upgrade. We have more power then ever in consoles and PC's, yet the games still look like my old PS2 could run them. I'm not saying they need to look rediculous. But lighting and shading could be improved, more detail to the minifigs to make them look more like actual Lego. Basically, take the Lego movie and Lego Batman movie, give the minifigs more articulation points, and that should be what they look like now, but they don't. Heck I'd settle for Lego Worlds in terms of where we should be at visually. It can be done people. I'm even willing to trade off compatibility with the last generation of hardware to do it, even if it means I wouldn't be able to play them yet. It is something that needs to happen.
  8. Time to go Digital

Before you read on, note that I'm very much on the camp of local multiplayer. But even I admit that, if we can, we should have both. And this also came from a Facebook group I'm a part of related to Dimensions, so thank you to that person for the idea.  Dimensions does have online multiplayer in terms of the Battle Arenas, but at this point, its probably time for some online co-op multiplayer. Just can we please still have local? I know you want to only have one WB but please can we have both?

I have been working on an updated version of  a character roster, building on what Year 1 and 2 have done, its still some time away as before I publish it, I'd like to give powers to the characters and maybe, if I can get the time to dig into Stud.IO, make mock ups of what they could look like based on currently existing pieces. It's taking longer then I expected, due to brainstorming ideas, and the site content schedule going from weekly to daily. Hopefully I can get it soon though as its something I really want to get out, I'm not really happy with how the first one turned out as it was rushed, its was mostly still my personal work notes. See you on Wednesday for the opening impressions on Ducktales.

ACNL: Mediaton Journal Week 1

Mediaton Journal: Boom Town

Day 2

I woke up and was pretty impressed with the new house’s exterior. Although not as spacious as my villager’s house on the inside, it will have to do for now. I check my mail and I heard a small voice calling to me. I went to examine it and to my surprise it was a talking magic lamp! I was somewhat freaked out by it, but I decided to do as it said and put it in my house for the time being.

Isabelle actually stopped by to give me a house warming present before I got a chance to put the lamp down. She gave me some cute paw print pattered wallpaper that I just had to use. I put down the lamp into its new home as I head to town hall to do mayor duties.
Isabelle told me I have to win over the townsfolk so I can get a villager’s permit before I become mayor, so I did some chores around town. Naomi wanted to change her catchphrase to something fabulous, so I thought of the most fab thing at the time.
Merengue asked to find the elusive peacock butterfly. I thought it was no problem…except the huge glaring problem of it not appearing unless if there are special flowers in the town. I ran around town for hours before I realized it. Sorry Merengue…please forgive me.
I didn’t finish the villager’s permit that day, but I did manage to hone my bee catching technique. So now I have revenge, REVENGE I SAY HAHAHAHAHA!

Day 3

I saw a visitor to the town today. She was apparently a famous carpenter named Sahara. I gave her some bells to work on my house but my opinion was somewhat mixed...all she really did was track sand on the floor.
I’ve heard word that a villager moved in today. His name is Butch. He’s still in boxes but I can already sense he’s a bit of a gruff guy. I wonder why he moved so far away from everyone else. Maybe he likes the solitude?

I hung out with Merengue later in the day, and I did more chores for the villager’s permit. I eventually got the permit! But…I had to wait until the next day to actually do any actual mayor duties.

Day 4

I woke up a bit later than usual, and I saw a house plot…straight across from mine. It said it belonged to someone named Tammy. I should’ve known that villagers would pop up right near my house. I had to shake of that thought because I finally got my villager’s permit, so off to the town hall I go.

Isabelle said that I could either enact the town ordnance, or construct a Public Works Project or PWP for short. I’ll put out a poll for the villagers to choose which PWP they would want. In the meantime, I enacted the Bell Boom town ordnance to focus on future payments for the town.
Since all my mayor duties are done for now, I visited Butch who was out and about since he wasn’t a slave to his moving boxes anymore. Despite his gruff personality he sometimes comes off as an old man. Don't tell him that though.

Day 5

The bell boom ordinance is live and I filled my pockets to the brim with bees and beehives. I got a lot of bells and I am going to continue to grind for the future PWP that is currently being voted. I met the animal that moved right in front of my house. Her name is Tammy and she is a bear. Despite her moving right in front of my house, I somewhat developed a soft spot for her.

I've noticed a hybrid grew in my town. A pink rose. Maybe the town would appreciate if I started growing flower gardens.

Day 6

I find myself frequenting the Able Sisters lately. They have a lot of cute things in stock, I might change my look soon enough...now if I can find a matching skirt. Chester wanted me to bring back Butch to his place. Butch's house was a long way from all the villagers, I guess he just prefers long walks. I feel bad seeing him so secluded; I might have to build a bridge for him in the future once I get enough funds.

Day 7

Another plotted land has sprung up, his name is Tex. He is right next to my house. I'm starting to feel a little claustrophobic.

I said hi to the quiet hedgehog Mabel today. She is working in the corner of the Able Sisters but I always say hi to her everyday, and I appreciate the work she does. I think she's starting to open up a bit more.
Chester wanted to play Hide and Seek with me, Tammy, and Naomi. Although they picked the worst hiding spots. Tammy even hid behind her own house. Even some of the villagers had odd tasks. Biff wanted me to pick an apple that I'm pretty sure he could've just reached himself.
The last thing I remember was seeing this weird tent in the town plaza. Some fast talking fox who calls himself Redd sells paintings. Looks really useful for building the town's museum, but I've heard that he sells bootlegs. You gotta be careful with what you're buying and who you're buying it from.

Note: This week has a poll for the PWP, please vote on the strawpoll

Pokemon Adventures Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum arc: She is the 1%

Not to be confused with Diamond and Pearl Adventure. Not doing those yet, probably not for a while.

From here on out, the order of events gets confusing. Everything from the start of Red and Blue to the start of Emerald was a linear series of events, one arc followed the other. Here on out, not so much. According to Bulbapedia, the timeline of events post Emerald is Heart Gold/ Soul Silver and Omega Ruby/ Alpha Sapphire happen 3 years after Emerald, then Pokemon Ranger which didn't get localized or printed, it was online only, so I'm not reviewing its manga or its sequel based on Ranger: Shadows of Almia. Roughly 3 years after HGSS is when Diamond and Pearl takes place, with two weeks after that being Platinum which is why they are both being covered here, and then *cough* *cough* years later we get Black and white, then Black 2 and White 2, then X and Y. To my knowledge, Sun and Moon have only recently started being published. That's the stance on the timeline (according to Bulbapedia), lets take a look at the arc itself, shall we?

First, a lot of what happens in this arc can be blamed on accidents and misunderstandings, in terms of the main characters. Diamond and Pearl are aspiring comedians who, thanks to running into two hired body guards, causing the letters the two groups had on them getting mixed up, and wearing scarfs. I wish I was making that up, got a pokedex and starter pokemon each, and become the bodyguards for Lady Platinum Berlitz, who from this point forward I'll be calling Platinum.Platinum, in family tradition, is traveling across the Sinnoh region to collect a stone from the top of Mt Coronet, as she is the air to the Berlitz fame and fortune. That whole "She is the 1%" title joke applies directly to her, because Platinum is not only rich and intelligent, and apparently according to some people on the internet attractive (I don't see it honestly), but she also obtains all the gym badges of Sinnoh, participated in a contest, but also took on the frontier brains, and won if memory serves me correctly, as I actually read the books late February, early March, in less time then Sapphire and Emerald took. I don't count Ruby because she only participated in one whereas he cleared all the contests. Is she a "Mary Sue"? No, because she does have to learn all of that almost on her own. We see her train her team, she's not a god.

Of course, because this is based on the gen 4 games, they run into Team Galactic, and I'll be honest, I love the way they portrayed the four main members of the team. Mars is always really up beat to the point where its surprising someone like that is a villain, Saturn is actually so insecure and controlling that he acts tougher then he is, Jupiter is basically a bad-ass, kinda generic Bond like villain to the point that I can't help giving her a tough Russian/ German accent. You call it racist now but there's no denying its easy to make anyone sound like a bad-ass if you give them one of those accents... and the right voice. Cyrus is basically a psudo god, to the point where I'm surprised they made Magnezone and Probopass that powerful in the story. And of course, we have the best champion of all time, and she's basically ripped straight out of the games, and given a bad-ass boost. I love the way they portrayed Cynthia here, it works so well for her. No one has matched her as a champion for many, many reasons, here is just one of them.

The arc itself does closely follow the events of the games, at least Diamond and Pearl. It's not one for one, due to the fact that there needs to be a story there, but it is relatively close. Most changes coming around the seventh gym and the attack on the lakes, and the platinum part of the arc is its own unique story based on the post game content of Platinum. If you've come this far in the books, then you may as well go all the way. Next review is going to be an Opening Impressions of Ducktales, and of course there is the Playlist videos every weekday, and the Journals on the weekend. Enjoy.

Mediaholics Journal: Blaster's Happy Home Designing Week 1 (27/3/17-1/4/2017)

“Today is the day our new employee arrives, yes, yes!”

So while Marissa leads the town and stalks Meregue, I’ve got the pleasure of being a Happy Home Designer. Well at least it’s not Amiibo Festival, I think I’d die if I had to play that every day. Trust me when I say days in Happy Home Designer are nowhere near as long as days can be in New Leaf. So, don’t be surprised if these are far shorter then Marissa’s New Leaf posts. The rule with this is that one in game day equals one real world day, even if one in game day is about five minutes (which is great for me as it means I can do these while rendering videos). So, what do you get up to on day one of the game?

First, character customization. While in NL (for the record, as it’ll get annoying to say it going forward, NL means New Leaf and HHD means Happy Home Designer for these posts), your facial features are determined by the questions you ask Rover, whereas here, in what I’m unofficially calling Holicity (Marissa’s being Mediaton, here being Holicity, get it?!), you do get full face customization to your own preference. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a picture of my face day 1 so the face reveal will have to wait at the time I’m writing this part, but it will happen one day! Unfortunately, as well, character customization isn’t as in depth here (no going to work in PJ’s for me ) but there are other accessories, according to the game, that I can get later down the line for my head. So yay?

After a basic introduction to the team, staring you as “the one who will do everything in this game because you’re not an NPC”, Lyle, Digby, Lottie and Tom “break your leg benders” Nook, you’re tasked with designing your first home. A home that has “all things Cute, a lovely atmosphere and is an utterly charming room” because NPC houses are one room buildings in Animal Crossing, and you’re given access to an assortment of items that have a very clear cut theme to them, in that they are varying shades of pink, and have a heart pattern to them, all for your co-worker Lottie. She couldn’t do it herself due to being so busy which work, which is understandable. Allow me to show you what I did with the place.

I tried to go for a comfortable, yet functional room including a desk station with a digital overhead clock, eating area for guests, and a bed to sleep in with a large rug to cover the birch wood floor panelling and to bring the room together. Trust me when I say none of that’s mandatory, and depending on the random villagers I get, I may or may not be showing that off. For science, of course. Lottie though was happy with it and with her seal of approval, I went back to the office to stay the night, as I don’t get a home to myself… Truly, the lifestyles are vastly different between the two games. Onward to day 2!

Day 2

So after coming from a house that I'll never see, in a uniform that may never get washed. I arrive to work to find a panicking Lottie, and my first customer, for tutorials are not done yet, and you must move Goldie into her hew house. Goldie, loves books, loves them, and wanted to live in a forest of books. Admittedly, I was tempted to give her exactly what she wanted, and fill her house with nothing but books, but that is a punishment that I'll save for those who... deserve it...

Still, I like to keep customers happy, and decorated her house as she asked. A lot of Green wooden furniture, two large bookcases full of books, a pile of books on her table, and her record player to which I forget the name, which has shown me that there is music options for the houses, so now every house will get one. Besides, they don't need things like kitchens and bathrooms... right? I also learned of a new power I have, the power of telekinesis over living things. Not just plants, but villagers. Trust me, I'll be showing pics off in Day 3, but believe me, it is hilarious, and kinda makes me think of this. No idea why...

After her free Airplane lessons, Goldie did enjoy her house and taught me Joy in the process, now this automaton with the powers of a god can blend in better with the living folk... With another client happy, it is onto Day 3.

Day 3
Couldn't find a image of him that wasn't tiny, so here's his amiibo card

This automaton is getting sick of your tutorials you questionably happy game...

Alas, yes, there are more tutorials, being a "Client List" allowing you to travel to completed houses, and the LR=Camera, so here's a face reveal.

The other "tutorial" in this was outdoor clients, basically you can go outside and see if people are interested in you making a house for them. Our newest victim... I mean client, is Lopez, who wanted a metropolitan styled house. I think its safe to say I did that, correct, Lopez?

The game does unfortunately get repetitive very quickly, hence why I stick to doing them by weeks.

Day 4

Who's bright idea was it to make me work for my own work? What kind of backwards logic is that?

So because there are no clients booked in, I have to step outside and find clients. And who do I find? a Blue frog and a black horse that seems to hate the colour spectrum and sticks with the extremes. I managed to get in contact with mayor stalker, get her opinions on the decision, and it turned out it was the horse's lucky day. Congratulations... Roscoe, you're getting a house.

"A Black and White Bastion"? Seriously? You're one step away from depressed goth levels of bleak. It's so bleak I can make it look like I killed you on your bed. See?

Still, it is insulting that you think my artistic tastes are, and I quote, "GOOD", not only did you not need to yell but you also call my genius sub par. You wanted my work, and this is what you do to show it? I should have given you a worse house. "Thanks for teaching me Aggression you bleak foal.

Day 5

I think its almost time I got a promotion.

Before going back outside to scalp for more customers, I was informed by my lazy boss and Isabelle of a town work project I'll be tasked with designing tomorrow. Unfortunately I wasn't able to ask what the state of stalker mayor's town is. I only have a basic idea of what it is at the time I write this, something about installing hydrants and benches...

At least the choices today were easier to pick, in theory. There is only room for one automaton in this village, so the walking fruit gets a house. That was my logic before seeing what I got myself into. All the jerk gave me to work with was fruit, bloody fruit. This abomination of science drove me insane. They wanted fruit, they got fraging fruit! That fact that you like the hoarder design for your house also disgusts me. HOW DO YOU LIKE THIS?!

Day 6

From houses to a School with one class room? Eh, lets see where this goes.

It is a tiny school though when all that's needed is a Teacher's desk,  four desks, and four seats, in one room. Truly, this will house the growing minds of tomorrow. I do believe Isabelle will agree, I decided to make some more use of the room, turning it into a lecture hall with a few extra facilities. Still wish the school could have been a full school and not a room, I get bored sometimes and would like more of a challenge then just designing one room.

ACNL: Mediaton Journal Introduction

Day 1: Moving to Mediaton

                April 2nd

I was riding on a train and on my way to a new town. I left my last town for a breath of fresh air. I’m not going to leave forever I will visit another time, although we are not thinking of that town right now. I’m on my way to Mediaton, a town with a river that leads into the western sea. It was a newer town that was recently put on the map.

When I got off the train I was greeted by four residents of the town. It seemed that they planned a welcoming party…although this is the first time I was meeting them, it was really weird. The yellow dog even insisted I was mayor for some reason. I think they were mistaken; maybe they are looking for another human? Before I could argue the yellow dog dragged me to the town hall to discuss further. She said her name was Isabelle, the mayor’s secretary, or really my secretary. She gave me an ID and told me to go find a house. She pointed me the way to Nook’s Homes on the map. Nook was really generous to let me place a plot down for a house since there were no vacant houses. The best we can do is a tent but it’ll be cozy enough for the day. I’m sure I can quickly get enough money to pay off the mortgage. I know my ways. My house is placed near some neighbors and the local shop. I wanted a pretty convenient place.
I went back to the Town Hall to tell Isabelle that I successfully placed my roots down. She gave me a small tree to celebrate the official founding of Mediaton. During the celebration I saw all the residents there, but there was one that caught my eye. She was a rhino but she looked particularly sweet. Maybe it was because she looks like a cupcake? I learned that her name was Merengue and her house wasn’t too far from mine. The first thing I did after the celebration was meet her, with all the other villagers of course.

The villagers were kind to me, but I wasn’t sure it was just because I somewhat have authority over them. I wasn’t officially the mayor yet but they treat me as such. First there’s Biff, who is a Hippo that’s into sports. Despite his buff appearance, he’s somewhat of a dork. He lives next to Wendy who is an outgoing nerdy sheep. She comes across as someone who updates their social media pretty often. I should remind myself to share my profiles with her. Chester is a panda that appreciates older antique things. He enjoys newer things sure, but his love is in old black and white movies and history books. I forgot about Naomi the cow, but she doesn’t speak much. She’s the most secluded from all the other villagers. Why her house is behind Town Hall is beyond me.

Then there is Merengue. I have to admit it she’s cute, no, she’s downright adorable. She has a huge interest in baking and she watches restaurant shows all the time. I talked to her so often that day, she joked that it almost felt like I was stalking her. Maybe I should give her a break. She grew enough attached to me that she gave me the nickname “Muffin”. Since she was so into baking, I’m not surprised I would be called a food item.

I did a lot that day. I met a ton of people, found some furniture, and even paid off my house. Even though there were construction sounds outside my house, I slept like a rock in a coma that night.
